Erik Fox, PLPC, earned a Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice from Columbia College and served in law enforcement for a number of years. Erik graduated with distinction from Colorado Christian University with a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Prior to joining Complete Family Medicine, a Service of Hannibal Regional Healthcare System (HRHS), Erik worked in private practice and community health settings. Erik is currently a Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Missouri and is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate in the state of Washington. In addition to his licensure, Erik is also a certified Biblical Counselor and is passionate about integrating faith, spirituality, and philosophy into evidenced based therapy. Erik’s varied work experience has allowed him to successfully work with diverse populations and provide successful treatment for a wide range of mental illnesses and presenting challenges.

Erik believes there are four essential components to successful therapy. These include a patient who recognizes an area for potential change/growth, a patient who desires to successfully enact the identified needed change, a strong therapeutic relationship between the patient and clinician built on trust, and hope with the patient that what they are doing will successfully bring about the desired change. He strives to demystify and uncomplicate the therapeutic process. Erik avoids academic and clinical language, and patients often tell him they appreciate his “conversational” approach. He believes counseling is most effective when the patient and client simply share information and relate to one another. Many of Erik’s patients have referred to sessions as feeling “less like I am talking to a counselor and more like I am talking to a trusted friend.” He has successfully worked with diverse populations including persons who are either new to counseling or failed to establish a quality relationship with previous therapists.

Erik is passionate about helping people identify what they consider to be a meaningful/purposeful existence, and empowering that person to make choices that lead toward their definition. Numerous mental illnesses can manifest when one does not feel meaning in one’s life. These challenges intensify when we feel “stuck” or “trapped” in our current situation. Erik works with patients to eliminate negative symptoms associated with conditions; however, more importantly, he helps patients discover why those symptoms manifest so they do not return after completing successful therapy.

Erik utilizes an eclectic blend of person-centered, choice theory, and existential therapies. Erik primarily works with persons seeking faith/spiritual/philosophical integrated counseling, college/career counseling, and anxiety/depression counseling.
